Real Martial Arts, a Short Drive from Tomball
Tomball families do not have to settle for a franchise curriculum to train real martial arts. Ground Dwellers sits just down FM 2920 in Spring, close enough to fold into your week around school, work, and dinner.
You train the Carlos Machado Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu system under Professor Eddie Avelar, a 4th-degree black belt with more than 22 years on the mat, not a rotating cast of part-time instructors.
Whether you are coming from Old Town Tomball, near Tomball ISD, or out by Burroughs Park, the trip down FM 2920 is short and predictable.
Why Tomball Trains at Ground Dwellers
- A Real Black Belt on the Floor: Professor Eddie Avelar teaches directly. You learn from a 4th-degree Machado black belt who still rolls live with students every week.
- Direct Machado Lineage: This is a direct Carlos Machado Jiu-Jitsu Association academy, not a franchise badge. You train a system with a real bloodline.
- One Mat, Every Age: Kids from age 5, teens, and adults all have a place here, across Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, MMA, and Filipino martial arts.
- No Contracts: Month to month, no sign-up fee, and a free first class. Come see the room before you commit to anything.

Real reviews from real people on the mat.
The best all around place to train Brazilian jujitsu and grappling in Houston. Great training, good people to work with and a great facility. Eddie knows more about grappling than anyone I've ever met and I feel safe even having my kids train here.
This is an awesome gym! My husband and I joined to get fit, learn something new, and have fun and we have certainly enjoyed our experience here. Everyone we have met is very welcoming and friendly. Whether you're new or experienced, this gym is a great place to start or continue your martial arts journey. Highly recommend
Have trained at Ground Dwellers for years and never get tired of the community and vast knowledge! Does not matter what skill level or reason for wanting to train. Hobbyist, competition, or whatever. You can find what you need here and have fun doing it. The best gym and highly recommend
Coach Eddie is a fantastic instructor. Very knowledgeable and gave me a lot of valuable advice including tips on how to train off the mat. I was only visiting but would definitely come back next time I'm in town.
Awesome place. Made my pilgrimage to HQ. Had some great rolls with a variety of folks at all skill levels. Attended their open mat on a Saturday.
