Real Martial Arts, a Short Drive from The Woodlands
The Woodlands has no shortage of activities, but real Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under a Machado black belt is worth the short trip south. Ground Dwellers sits on Louetta Rd. in Spring, a quick drive down I-45 or Kuykendahl.
You train the Carlos Machado system under Professor Eddie Avelar, a 4th-degree black belt with more than 22 years on the mat, in a real academy built around progress rather than gimmicks.
Whether you are near Market Street, The Woodlands Mall, Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, or Creekside, the drive south to the academy is short and simple.
Why The Woodlands Trains at Ground Dwellers
- Learn From the Source: Professor Eddie Avelar is a 4th-degree Machado black belt and a CMJJ ambassador who still rolls with students. You learn from a real lineage, not a marketing one.
- Every Belt Earned: Progress here is real. Students advance because they earned it on the mat, which is exactly why the training holds up.
- Classes for the Whole Family: Kids from age 5, teens, and adults each have a place, across Jiu-Jitsu, Judo, MMA, and Filipino martial arts.
- Try It Free: Your first class is free, with no contract and no sign-up fee. Come see the room and meet the coaches.

Real reviews from real people on the mat.
The best all around place to train Brazilian jujitsu and grappling in Houston. Great training, good people to work with and a great facility. Eddie knows more about grappling than anyone I've ever met and I feel safe even having my kids train here.
This is an awesome gym! My husband and I joined to get fit, learn something new, and have fun and we have certainly enjoyed our experience here. Everyone we have met is very welcoming and friendly. Whether you're new or experienced, this gym is a great place to start or continue your martial arts journey. Highly recommend
Have trained at Ground Dwellers for years and never get tired of the community and vast knowledge! Does not matter what skill level or reason for wanting to train. Hobbyist, competition, or whatever. You can find what you need here and have fun doing it. The best gym and highly recommend
Coach Eddie is a fantastic instructor. Very knowledgeable and gave me a lot of valuable advice including tips on how to train off the mat. I was only visiting but would definitely come back next time I'm in town.
Awesome place. Made my pilgrimage to HQ. Had some great rolls with a variety of folks at all skill levels. Attended their open mat on a Saturday.
