Meet Professor Eddie Avelar
4th-Degree Black Belt Under Master Carlos Machado
Professor Eddie Avelar is a fourth-degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Master Carlos Machado, with over 22 years of experience on the mat. Renowned for his technical expertise and engaging teaching style, Professor Avelar specializes in gi-based techniques, particularly the “Broken Butterfly” series and the “Pro Guard” or “Butter Half” positions. These systems emphasize dynamic control and offensive strategies from butterfly and half guard positions.
Despite being over 54, Professor Avelar remains an active sparring partner, embodying the philosophy that Jiu-Jitsu is a lifelong journey. His interactive instruction focuses on hands-on drilling, live demonstrations, and open dialogue, fostering a deep understanding of the art among his students. As a respected ambassador of the Carlos Machado Jiu-Jitsu Association, he continues to inspire practitioners across the country through seminars and mentorship.
